Sustainable Printing at GSB Digital

At GSB Digital, we recognize our responsibility to minimize environmental impact in an industry that relies heavily on natural resources such as trees and water. We embrace the concept of extended stewardship, making conscious decisions across our operations to reduce waste, improve energy efficiency, and select environmentally responsible materials and technologies.

Our Policy

Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in every stage of our operations, from manufacturing to final production. Our key initiatives include:

  • Recycling & Waste Reduction: All paper and corrugated waste are collected daily for recycling.
  • Energy Efficiency: Our facility was designed with sustainability in mind, featuring LED lighting throughout, motion sensors to reduce unnecessary energy use, and a strategic hillside location that improves heating and cooling efficiency.
  • Sustainability Print Technology: Our large format department exclusively utilizes HP Latex technology, deliberately avoiding UV printing. HP Latex Printing Technologies offers a more sustainable solution with water-based inks that address environmental and health concerns while maintaining high-performance print quality.
  • Equipment & Vendor Selection: We prioritize long-term partnerships with manufactures such as HP, whose sustainability commitments align with ours.

Certifications & Sustainability Assessments

  •  FSC Certification: GSB Digital is audited annually and is FSC-certified, ensuring that our paper products come from responsibly managed forests and are handled according to FSC-certification guidelines in our facility and throughout our production line.
  • Eco Vadis Assessment: We are an Eco Vadis client with an active environmental portfolio and sustainability score that reflects our commitment to responsible business practices.

Environmental Impact Assessment

While GSB Digital has not conducted a formal environmental impact assessment, we are committed to ongoing evaluation and adaptation of our processes to minimize waste and reduce our environmental footprint.  Our core digital operations support sustainable business practices by enabling on-demand prodcution and reducing excess inventory and waste.

Environmental Impact Targets

We continue to evaluate operations that can be phased out and replaced with more sustainable alternatives. Although GSB Digital is not currently pursuing a renewalbe energy or carbon offset program, we hold a certifciate of eligibility for participation in Con Edison’s manufacturing district energy cost savings program.

Environmental Management System Accreditation

GSB Digital does not have an environmental accreditation but is currently exploring assessment with Ecovadis.

Public Environmental Performance

Although our environmental performance is not publicly available, we do share our environmental commitment and partnered efforts on our website when available.

Supplier Diversity Program

  • Currently, GSB Digital does not have a documented supplier diversity program in place. However many local, small-business, and independently owned businesses currently exist in our portfolio of supply partners.
  • GSB Digital does not qualify for any minority/diversity/small business status.

On-demand printing means no minimums and no order minimums means zero waste. Digital on-demand printing allows you to print exactly what you need, when you need it, and where you need it. Analog printing, on the other hand, encourages overproduction that results in large volumes of marketing collateral, books, and labels that are thrown away due to overprinting and obsolescence.

Chain of Custody Certification programs are validated through third-party audits assuring accurate tracking of wood fiber from a certified forest to the mill followed by the merchant. We partner with material vendors and merchants that qualify for these various certifications with the most prevalent being:

  • FSC:  The Forest Stewardship Council is an international certification well recognized and regarded around the world. The FSC logo identifies products, which contain wood from forests managed with respect for people and the environment. More information is available at fsc.org.
  • PEFC:  The Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification is an umbrella organization that works by endorsing national forest certification systems developed through multi-stakeholder processes and tailored to local priorities and conditions. Visit pefc.org for further details.
  • SFI:  The Sustainable Forestry Initiative is an independent, non-profit organization that aims to promote sustainable forest management.  US-based SFI is a member organization of PEFC. SFI-certified papers are available mainly in North America. More information is at sfiprogram.org

We are committed to mitigating solid waste and as such we recycle many materials used in the plant including wood pallets, packaging materials, plastic, inks, and printed-paper waste.

Most of our paper stocks contain anywhere from 10% – 100% post-consumer waste and are FSC and SFI® chain of custody certified. Additionally, our HP Indigo production presses use an on-deck oil recycling system that cuts our oil consumption in half by removing water and reusing imaging oil. This press also utilizes HP electroInks that produce vibrant and durable colors with thinner applications.
