In the local community, high school football is serious business. Between the pep band, dedicated fans, and the aroma of nachos in the stadium, the game is the place to be on Friday nights.
Our president’s son attends Stamford High School and plays football for the Black Knights. When our president saw the signs in Boyle Stadium for the first time, his passion for printing drove him to do something about the outdated stadium signage. He spoke with the school’s athletic director and asked if he could revamp the signage at no cost to the school. The director immediately said yes, and our team quickly jumped on the project.
Various GSB Digital team members committed to this beautification project. Marketing revamped and modified the design of the signage and our prepress department engineered the mechanics of how the new prints would wrap around the previous signage frames. GSB Digital’s large format department printed and mounted the signs and the president himself, along with a few of our installation gurus, dismounted and remounted the signage to the scoreboard and concession stand.
The new signs were printed on our HP Latex 370 printer using a 3M outdoor adhesive vinyl. The Latex printer was used to ensure longevity to the new signage guaranteeing them to last three to five years outdoors. To further increase their lifespan, a laminate was also applied to the prints. Ensuring that the signs’ vibrancy would be maintained is important to us. The school’s colors are orange and black, and we wanted to be sure those colors didn’t fade easily over time. Once the prints were laminated, the bases for the signs were routed on two 10-foot di-bond boards using our Zund G3 Digital cutter. The di-bond was routed with channels in the back making it possible to fold the edges of the di-bond around itself at a 90-degree angle. Then our team mounted and wrapped the printed vinyl around the bases to create the 20-foot signs needed for the scoreboard and concession stand.
On installation day, the scoreboard sign was hung fifteen feet in the air and the concession stand sign was mounted above the service window. The job required precise measuring and took three men five hours to install both signs. From removal to install, the project was completed in just four weeks. Stamford High School was blown away by the results. The positive reactions are what makes projects like this worthwhile for GSB Digital. So, if you ever find yourself in Boyle Stadium underneath the Friday night lights, we hope you will enjoy the new signage, some nachos, and the game too.
